The Atlas Copco Tropical Thermostat Kit 75C (part no. 2901-1618-00) is a genuine thermostatic valve kit, opening at 75°C — a higher threshold than the standard 40°C and 60°C variants we also supply, intended for compressors operating in hot ambient (tropical) climates where a higher opening temperature helps avoid unnecessary bypass cycling. The valve (part no. 1622-7064-03) is also cross-referenced as a Quincy-branded part, worth checking if you’re servicing a Quincy compressor built on a shared platform.

Two Very Different Ways This Can Fail
A thermostatic valve stuck in the bypass position sends oil around the cooler continuously, allowing oil temperature to climb — this often shows up as a high-temperature shutdown that seems to come from nowhere.A valve stuck in the full-cooling position does the opposite:
oil is over-cooled,especially in colder ambient conditions, which increases the risk of moisture condensation inside the system rather than a temperature fault.Neither failure mode is obvious from the outside — the valve looks the same in either position.
Why Running Too Cool Is Also a Problem
It ‘s intuitive to think cooler oil is safer, but running oil temperature too low — particularly in cold ambient conditions — allows moisture in the compressed air to condense inside the oil system rather than evaporate, leading to water contamination in the lubricant over time.A properly functioning thermostatic valve keeps oil within a target range specifically to avoid this, not just to prevent overheating.
Common Questions
How do I know if the thermostatic valve has failed?
An unexplained high-temperature shutdown,or (less obviously) persistent moisture/condensation in the oil,are the two opposite signs -each points to the valve stuck in a different position.
Can I bypass this valve if it fails,to keep running temporarily?
This isn ‘t recommended — running without proper thermal regulation risks either overheating or moisture contamination, both of which cause more damage over time than a planned shutdown for repair.
